Emergency Assistance for Myanmar Earthquake
03/04/2025 ( update 09/04/2025 )

On March 28, a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck near Mandalay in central Myanmar. A wide area was affected, in particular, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups are placed in dire situations.
AAR Japan (Association for Aid and Relief, Japan), in cooperation with partner organizations, began providing emergency assistance to people with disabilities. We will also provide assistance to people/children with disabilities whom we have been supporting since before the earthquake occurred.
Activity #1 Support for people/children with disabilities

Since 2000, AAR has been operating a vocational training school for people with disabilities in Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar. We are confirming the safety of all graduates and foster children receiving support from the ‘Children’s Future Program’, providing assistance to those affected by the disaster by sending funds to buy food and daily necessities.
The house of Shwe (pseudonym, in her 30s), a vocational training school graduate who is handicapped in her right hand, collapsed in the earthquake. She said, “Nine villagers, including my niece, died. There is a lack of food, water, and other necessities, and transportation to nearby areas has been cut off, so I have no idea what will happen next”.
Activity #2 Distribution of supplies

In Mandalay, which has been severely damaged, stores and markets have been destroyed, and distribution has been halted.
In the affected areas, people who have lost their homes are forced to take shelter outdoors in the intense heat, with temperatures reaching nearly 40°C. The spread of mosquito-borne dengue fever and other infectious diseases is also a concern and immediate assistance is required.
We directly distribute relief supplies such as food, drinking water, hygiene products, and mosquito nets to people in the affected areas.
In addition to the Yangon office, AAR will dispatch an emergency support team from Tokyo to assess the needs of the affected people and promote emergency assistance.
We would like to ask for your cooperation in AAR’s emergency support for the Myanmar Earthquake.
