Emergency Response to Afghanistan Earthquake

04/09/2025 ( update 17/09/2025 )

On August 31, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, claiming the lives of more than 1,400 people. AAR Japan is assessing the situation through our local office in Kabul and will distribute emergency relief supplies to affected people.

The Problem

Afghanistan has faced not only political instability but also repeated large-scale disasters in recent years. In Kunar province, a mountainous area near the Pakistan border, many mud-brick houses have collapsed, burying people alive. Rescue operations continue for those trapped in the rubble, and local media report that the number of casualties may continue to rise.

How We Help

AAR Japan has provided various support activities since we established our Kabul office in 2002, including the 2023 earthquake, where we provided emergency relief to affected people. Moreover, we have long supported internally displaced people and carried out mine action programs. We will use our experience and established networks to provide prompt emergency response to the people affected by the current earthquake, and will continue to provide long-term assistance to ensure that no one is left behind.

We would like to ask for your cooperation in AAR’s emergency response to the Afghanistan Earthquake.
