Noto Peninsula Earthquake: AAR Japan launched Emergency Support
03/01/2024
The Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, was hit by a massive earthquake of magnitude 7.6 on January 1st, 2024. We would like to express our deepest sympathies to all victims of the earthquake.
AAR Japan [Association for Aid and Relief, Japan] has dispatched an emergency support team to the affected areas to deliver relief supplies to the affected facilities for the disabled from the afternoon of January 3rd, and is hurrying preparations for a soup kitchen.
The area where one welfare service center for the disabled in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, is located, was hit by severe shaking, water was cut off, and liquefaction was occurring. Noriko Hara, the head of the facility said, “Each of the 29 users of the facility was safe at home, but the house of one of the staff members collapsed“. The parents of a teenage girl with intellectual disabilities expressed her concern, “She was with us at the time of the earthquake, so she was relatively calm, but might be panic when she goes outside”.
The AAR emergency support team provided the facility with bottled drinking water, ready-to-eat food, and cleaning supplies. In addition, together with our partner NPO, we are preparing a soup kitchen.
